I am a really mean mom. My children don't get a smart phone until they are able to pay for it themselves.
And I don't want them to hold a job in high school because their "job" is getting good grades. Since my oldest daughter has straight As, that's worked pretty well for us.
It means no smart phone until she graduates and can get a job, however.
Except this past week, Dan and I were eligible for upgrades on our phones. And Dan doesn't really need a new phone. He's perfectly happy with his iPhone 4s and the .25 GB of data he uses a month.
Dan? Not really an online presence. That .25 is all checking sports scores.
Our daughter turns 18 two weeks from tomorrow. Having one child that was over 18 was a little passing of an era. Having two? Makes me feel really old. Can't help but make it a little about me. Because a mom of two adults is not really where I feel like I should be.
Yet here I am and what do you get a girl for her 18th birthday?
If her favorite color has been yellow since she was able to talk, you get her a yellow iPhone 5c (using her dad's upgrade, which we transferred to her).
She might have screamed while hugging me when she realized the phone I was holidng was hers. I might not have been able to hear for a bit. She kissed me. We're not a kissy family, but she kissed me.
We're paying her data fees for six months. That gives her until September to get settled into college and find a part time job to cover the small amount it costs us to add a phone to our plan. And we gave it to her early because our billing month started yesterday and she might as well use it while we're paying for it.
And our girl? She's pretty happy with her early birthday present.
Note to self: turn off the keyboard clicks. Cuz she texts. A lot.
