I'm working on a huge project and one of the things it has me doing is thinking about the things that are scattered around our house.
Last weekend, in a major cleaning fit, I threw away 3 trash bags of stuff that had been sitting on top of our kitchen cabinets. I had a ton of wicker baskets up there for decorative purposes. The problem with that is that I hadn't cleaned said wicker baskets in... oh a decade or so. I'd just sort of forgotten they were there. They'd become part of the wallpaper.
The experience and my project had me thinking about other things that are just *there* in our house. That we don't use daily, that are part of the display.
I grabbed these from the top shelf of my personal bookcase.
Minnie the dog. Abby. Madeline and her pup, Genevieve.
The dolls and animals that shaped Mykiah's young life.
These won't ever go into the dumpster as so much junk did last weekend. I just couldn't... even if Mykiah could.
Abby was purchased at Walmart when Mykiah was maybe 2 and that doll went everywhere for years. Minnie was a gift from me when I was at a conference. Madeline and Genevieve came from Mykiah's love of the books... and then went everywhere with us as well. Four animals that went on vacations, overnights to Grandma's, were held during thunderstorms. They make me remember a time when Mykiah was my youngest (all 4 were purchased before Chesney was even born) and life was so full of just surviving the day to day.
Now Mykiah makes dinner more often than I do, she will no longer happily dine on a pepperoni and pickle sandwich, and she sleeps with 15 blankets instead of her dolls and dogs.
Life has changed.
It's been a week of physical changes around our house... new appliances, new school year. I think it's only fair to acknowledge those changes. You'll have to give me a moment to remember the past, too. It's good to move forward.
But sometimes I miss the past, too.
