Eye Candy of the week

Thanks to my loyal blog readers for your many great nominations for this week's Eye Candy of the Week.

I got a lot of great suggestions.

Except I like my guys a little offbeat and none really struck the right chord.

I mean, yes, there is Patrick Dempsey. And yes, he was such a lovable dork back in the 80s:

Cantbuymelove Only problem is that although I'll grant you he's still hot now, I'm just not a big Gray's Anatomy fan. I liked him just fine in Sweet Home Alabama, but I really thought Josh Lucas stole that movie. So I just didn't feel right giving him the coveted 3rd ECOTW spot. (Cuz like that's something really important. I'm laughing my butt off right now cuz I'm all serious about my judging selection for a stupid 50x50 pixel photo on my blog.)

Rather than debate the various merits of all the other selections, I'll tell you who won. The suggestion that has stuck in my mind since I got it came from the first person to respond to my plea.
Johnny Depp.

I wasn't a fan in the 80s. I had a thing for the DeLuise kid in 21 Jump Street. Stop it. Stop laughing. I mean it.

I wasn't even a fan in the 90s. Nope, I didn't become a Depp fan until he became a Pirate.

ImagesWhen I heard Disney was doing a Pirates of the Caribbean movie, I did this mental groan. Did you see either The Haunted Mansion or Tower of Terror? Those are not good movies. That's why you haven't seen them. (OK, we actually rented Haunted Mansion last weekend. Kids wanted to see it. A very bad movie though.)

So I expected more of the same when I heard about the Pirate movie. All right, Johnny Depp is supposed to be a good actor (cuz I really hadn't seen any of his movies since Edward Scissorhands). And there's a guy named after one of my favorite places that's one of the stars of the movie. But really, how good can a movie based on a Disney ride be?

Um, pretty darn good.

I didn't really pick him because I think Mr. Depp is amazing to look at. Although he's certainly not bad on the eyes. I picked him because I think he's amazing to watch. I know last week I called John Cusack one of the greatest actors of my generation, but really, how can Johnny Depp not be at the top of that list?

What really amazed me was that after watching Pirates, the next movie I saw with him in it was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And he nailed that performance, too. How can one man so convincingly be a pirate one film and then transform into a freaky candy maker the next? And I do mean transform. His posture, his voice, everything about him changed. I have incredible respect for him.

Now I thought Pirates 2 was pretty confusing, but I have great hopes for Pirates 3. Can't wait to see it the day before we leave for our Disney trip. And I'm going to keep following Johnny's career, anxious to find out who he can be next.

So my winner for suggesting Johnny Depp was IkeaGoddess. I'm thrilled to be able to give her a little treat, because her blog has been such a great resource for the digital scrapbooking community. If you haven't visited, check her out at Scrapping with Ikea Goddess. She has a great directory with all the freebies out there.

I hope you enjoy this week's eye candy. I have an idea for themes for the next month and one of them will be another chance to win a prize, so keep checking back!

mm, mmm, MMM! Love Johnny! my fave films of his, besides Pirates, were Chocolat and Finding Neverland. He is such a chameleon isn't he!

YAAAY! He is my alltime fav. I'd totally cheat on my DH for JD (shhhh). Like you, I wasn't a huge fan before Pirates, but since then I've given myself the luxury of Depp weekends and rented his movies - Chocolat (fantasic), Secret Window (he plays a really convincing nutjob), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (of course) and Finding Neverland (another brilliant performance) although not my favourite movie. Johnny really is one of the absolute best actors of our time.

Hey Johnny Depp is just a fab choice,, no worries about not picking Dempsey,, and I agree Josh Lucas did steal that movie (Sweet Home Alabama),, love that movie.

Deluise,,, don't tell no one,, but so did I. I am a Sci-fi geek and he works on Stargate SG-1 all the time, directing episodes,, he's in the behind the scenes commentary thingys all the time on the dvd's.

Kim, I was so not a fan until I saw him as a Pirate, and then I was so hooked. Have you seen From Hell? It's a terrible name for a movie, but I thought it was really good (though not appropriate for the kids). But he is GREAT eye candy, for sure!
